Modafinil - analeptic, used to treat sleepiness associated with narcolepsy.
Modafinil together with other methods is used in prevention of sleepiness caused by sleep apnea syndrome. Sleep apnea is also a very common sleep disorder, when people don’t’ breath enough during the sleep, wake up during the night to get some air and don’t get enough sleep in general. Modafinil acts by controlling the area of the brain which is responsible for a sleep/awake cycle, and promotes wakefulness.
Modafinil should be taken once a day orally. It can be taken with or without food. It is recommended to check with your doctor, if there are any time preference when you better take it. Usually Modafinil is taken in the morning. If you use Modafinil for the treatment of shift work disorder then you better take it an hour before you start your shift. Better to take Modafinil at the same time, if possible, and only change that after consulting your doctor. Modafinil will only help to reduce sleepiness, but it will not treat your condition, therefore you need to continue taking Modafinil even if you feel rested.
This medicine may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert. Avoid other dangerous activities until you know how Modafinil will affect your level of wakefulness. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking Modafinil.
To make sure Modafinil is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have angina (chest pain); cirrhosis or other liver problem; kidney disease; high blood pressure, heart disease, or history of heart attack; a history of mental illness or psychosis; or history of alcoholism or drug addiction.
Possible side effect
The most common side effects are headache, dizziness; feeling nervous or anxious; back pain; nausea, diarrhea, upset stomach; sleep problems (insomnia); or stuffy nose. Stop using Modafinil and call your doctor at once if you have depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts or actions; hallucinations, unusual thoughts or behavior, aggression, being more active or talkative than usual; chest pain, trouble breathing, uneven heart beats; or the first sign of any skin rash, no matter how minor you think it might be.
Modafinil can speed up the removal of other medications from your body, which may affect how they work. Examples of affected drugs include axitinib, bosutinib, certain products used to treat chronic hepatitis C (asunaprevir, ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir), among others. Check the labels on all your medicines (such as cough-and-cold products, diet aids) because they may contain ingredients that could increase your heart rate or blood pressure. Caffeine can increase the side effects of this medication. Modafinil is very similar to armodafinil. Do not take medications containing armodafinil while using Modafinil.
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time of the next intake just skip it and go back to your schedule.
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once.
It is recommended to keep Modafinil in a closed container and in places where children cant reach it. It is fine to store it at room temperature. We recommend to count how many tablets you’ve taken, so you know that nobody else is taking them.
